THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE PROVINCIAL ADMINISTRATION OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE (CA. 600-1200): I.3. APOTHEKAI OF AFRICA AND SICILY, FINAL NOTES AND CONCLUSIONS

Abstract

this assignment is divided into three parts. The first deals with the warehouses of Africa and Sicily. The African warehouse operated in 673/4 and it is considered that it can be part of the Byzano-Arab confrontation during the Istanbul blockade (674-678). The Sicily warehouse operated a few years later, in 696/7, and can be linked to the Byzantine campaign to retake Africa under the orders of Patriciou Ioannis. The second part presents and comments on new stamps of warehouses and royal compartments dating from the end of the 7th century to the recently published 740s. The view that the Lower Ecuadorian stamp (741/2) comes from the province of Armenia A has been revised. On the contrary, it is proposed that this rare geographical term refers to the ancient Doric Exaples, i.e. the cities of Kos, Aliakarnassos, Knidou and Rhodes (Igos, Kamios, Lindos). Finally, the stamps related to the institution of warehouses/royal cuttings dating back to 787/8 are presented. The third and final part of the study is devoted to general conclusions from the geographical overview of the provincial administration from the end of the 7th century to the middle of around the 8th century. Problems arising from the interpretation and content of the newer survey of warehouses/royal parks are highlighted and it is certified that the period 717/8-738/9 was the period of transition from the oldest depressed provincial administration system to the new system of “thematic” provincial administration. The study is supplemented by a list of the depots of the provinces of the Byzantine State, which are now classified by region and make it easier to understand the conclusions of this work.
