Abstract
The industrial activities of Kavala have since been dominated by tobacco preparation. But two factors have recently been played to the detriment of the city: mechanisationof manufacturing creates technological unemployment where it was only seasonal; the transfer of several businesses to Salonique reduces the number of jobs offered. The other activities of the city are also characterised by the under-employment. This situation was the result of the survey (1965-66). The installation of a chemical fertiliser machine in Nea Karvali did not seem likely to reverse a trend which seems to exclude the possibility of population and economic growth in Kavaladans in the coming years.
