Abstract
Chez Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978), the theme of the trip is present at every stage of his long career — such as an obsession. In the ‘meta-physical’ space of his paintings, there is an impression of silence, vacuum and anxiety — with the recurring idea of a departure, a wait or a return. The journey, which is mentioned more than real, is the metaphor of a life that has been made in vain, for which nothing can be expected. Mr de Chirico, who lost his concerns and was gradually protected by humour and autoderision, appeared in his work as the intreptive traveller of his own immobility.
