The differences of phonetic transcription between english and german in franz kafka’s der prozeβ

This research is aimed to compare the phonetic transcription between English and German since they are in same language family as Germanic Language. The two languages not only almost have some similarities in grammar, writing, meaning and pronouncing but also have some differences. The International Phonetic Alphabet of both languages showed the differences of vowels and consonants. The IPA represents sound more accurately and make easier to pronounce any kind of foreign language. This research applies the descriptive and comparative method by ways of collecting data, arranging or classifying the data and analyzing the data used the theory of comparative language and phonology. The type of word analyzed is the words that have similarities in writing and the word that correspondence in sound, where both languages has same meaning. There are 17 words that have similarities in writing and 50 words that correspondence in sound that explained by the manners and place articulations of both languages. The result of this research shows that there are eight differences, such as the differences of English /r/ as alveolar central approximant whereas German /r/ as uvular trills or uvular fricative, English /æ/ as low front unrounded whereas German pronounced /a/ as open central vowel, and English /ɑː/ as back vowel whereas German /a:/ as central vowel. Moreover, there are the phonetic symbols that only exist in English that are vowels /ᴧ/, /ɒ/, /ɑ:/, /æ/ and consonants /w/, /θ/, /ð/, tʃ/, /ʤ/, whereas German vowels /y:/, /ʏ/, /ø:/, /œ/, /ɐ/ and consonants /x/, /ç/, /pf/, /ts/.
