former unitarian pastor, Ralph Waldo Emerson treats proche-Oriental Antiquity as a corpus of texts (the biblique canon); in his view, it was part of a hermeneutical survey, inextricably linked to a thorough reflection on the nature and challenges of writing and reading. Inherited from Christian theology, this approach is based on assumptions that have become problematic at a time when advances in philology shed an innovative light on the history of writing, in particular thanks to Champollion’s discoveries that make it possible to decipher hierglyphic inscriptions. Historically, the biblical exegesis had hitherto been the task of drawing up correct interpretations and recovering the exact meaning of texts whose letter often seems ambiguous and confusing; the speech known as Divinity School Address is Emerson’s main contribution to this debate. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, progress in pro-European and eastern philology poses challenges of a different kind: what does a text mean, let alone read it “correctly”? What precautions should be taken to ensure its minimum readability before even the question of “just” interpretation arises? This test attempts to examine some of the tensions resulting from this new situation. The aim is to show how they influence Emerson’s thoughts on the semicotic nature of language, complicate its relationship with contemporary thinking and determine its attitude towards its own writing, in a way which, from the point of view of the 21st century, remains highly topical.

Ancien pasteur unitarien, Ralph Waldo Emerson assimile l’Antiquité proche-orientale à un corpus de textes (le canon biblique) ; pour lui, elle relève d’une enquête herméneutique, indissociable d’une réflexion poussée sur la nature et les enjeux de l’écriture et de la lecture. Héritée de la théologie chrétienne, cette approche s’appuie sur des présupposés devenus problématiques à l’heure où les progrès de la philologie jettent un éclairage novateur sur l’histoire de l’écriture, notamment grâce aux découvertes de Champollion qui permettent de déchiffrer les inscriptions hiéroglyphiques. Traditionnellement, l’exégèse biblique s’était jusque-là donné pour tâche d’élaborer des interprétations correctes, de retrouver la signification exacte de textes dont la lettre paraît souvent ambiguë et confuse ; le discours connu sous le nom de « Divinity School Address » constitue la principale contribution d’Emerson à ce débat. Au début du dix-neuvième siècle, les progrès de la philologie proche-orientale posent des problèmes d’un autre ordre : que signifie « lire » un texte, et a fortiori le lire « correctement » ? Quelles précautions faut-il prendre afin de garantir sa lisibilité minimale avant même que ne se pose la question de la « juste » interprétation ? Le présent essai tente d’examiner quelques-unes des tensions qui résultent de cette situation nouvelle. Il s’agit de montrer en quoi elles infléchissent la réflexion d’Emerson sur la nature sémiotique du langage, compliquent ses rapports avec la pensée contemporaine et déterminent l’attitude qu’il adopte vis-à-vis de sa propre écriture, d’une manière qui, du point de vue du vingt-et-unième siècle, conserve une grande actualité.

National audience. In the current department of Alpes-Maritimes, a whole range of enclosed dry stone structures has been inventoried since the end of the XIXe s on the southern mountains. The function of these structures can be multiple and varied. While many of them have been interpreted as occupied habitats from Fer to Antiquity, ranging from mere hamlet to true oppidum, a few fall outside this classification. Both their morphology and their size, or even their position in the landscape, have led us to question their possible use in pastoral activities and their place in the production systems of the age of the Fer and the ancient period. These plausible stabling structures along the lines of the ridges are not dated until now, but seem to have been used permanently. Moreover, depending on the period, they could be supplemented by other types of adjustments which we have yet to define. Their morphological presentation, as well as the observation of their temporal and spatial distribution, allow us to draw up an initial assessment of the places of the journey and to make assumptions about knowledge of the pastoral system of the age of the Fer and the ancient period in these mountain areas located in the eastern part of Narbonnaise and the Ancient Alps Maritimes, with pastoralism based on minor daily movements along the dredges, or grazing of the animals in the immediate vicinity of the villages.

In today's Alps-Maritimes department a variety of dry stone enclosures have been inventoried since the late nineteenth century on the Southern pre-Alpine high-lands. The function of these structures can be varied. If many of them have been interpreted as settlements occupied during the Iron Age and early Roman periods, either as simple hamlets or veritable oppidum, there remain some exceptions to this classification. Their morphology, their size or their position in the landscape has led us to wonder about their possible use in pastoral activities and their place in the production systems of the Iron Age and Roman periods. These likely stables are located along ridge lines, and are poorly dated but seem to have been long lasting. They could also be complementary to other types of development that are still to be defined. Morphological presentation, as well as observing their chronological and spatial distribution allows us to review the knowledge of the pastoral system in the Iron Age and the early Roman period in these mountain areas, located in the Eastern part of the Gallia Narbonensis and the Maritime Alps, showing a pastoralism based on daily herd movements covering short distances along drones, and grazing on land near the villages

National audience Dans l’actuel département des Alpes-Maritimes tout un ensemble de structures en pierres sèches de type enclos a été inventorié depuis la fin du XIXe s. sur les reliefs préalpins méridionaux. La fonction de ces structures peut être multiple et variée. Si nombre d’entre elles ont été interprétées comme des habitats occupés de l’âge du Fer à l’Antiquité, allant du simple hameau au véritable oppidum, quelques-unes échappent à cette classification. Tant leur morphologie que leur taille, voire leur position dans le paysage, nous ont amenée à nous interroger sur leur possible utilisation dans le cadre d’activités pastorales et sur leur place dans les systèmes de production de l’âge du Fer et de la période antique. Ces vraisemblables structures de stabulation implantées le long des lignes de crêtes sont peu ou mal datées mais semblent avoir connu une utilisation pérenne. Elles ont pu par ailleurs selon les périodes être complétées par d’autres types d’aménagements qu’il nous reste à définir. Leur présentation morphologique, ainsi que l’observation de leur répartition chronologique et spatiale, nous permettent de dresser un premier bilan sur les lieux de parcours et d’émettre des hypothèses sur la connaissance du système pastoral de l’âge du Fer et de la période antique dans ces espaces de montagne situés dans la partie orientale de la Narbonnaise et dans les Alpes Maritimes antiques, avec un pastoralisme basé sur des déplacements quotidiens peu excessifs le long des drailles, ou un pacage des animaux dans le proche voisinage des villages
