This article seeks to describe the social interactions between Byzantins and Muslims as a process that has gradually developed over time and was not an immutable series of similar episodes (spectacular embassies, interreligious fierce polemics, etc.) as portrayed by both medieval and modern historians. I will ask two simple questions: on the one hand, how have the knowledge of ‘Sarrasins’ and their religion entered Constantinople and became the subject of interest in Byzantine literature? On the other hand, how was this process integrated into the political and social life of Byzantins? I will start by looking at an even more basic issue: who are the Byzantins who, at that time, had contacts with Muslims? I assume that their concerns and interests in these reports have influenced the way Byzantins expressed their image of Arabs and Islam and responded to them. I identified three social groups in contact with Muslims at that time: (1) melkites, (2) soldiers and (3) Constantinople elites. These circles produced (or influenced) different literary responses, depending on their ways of perceiving Islam. I will present them separately and in approximately chronological order.

Cet article s’emploie à décrire les interactions sociales entre les Byzantins et les musulmans comme un processus qui s'est développé progressivement dans le temps et qui n'était pas une série immuable d'épisodes similaires (des ambassades spectaculaires, de féroces polémiques interreligieuses...) comme le présentent les historiens aussi bien médiévaux que modernes. Je vais poser deux questions simples : d'une part, comment les connaissances des « Sarrasins » et de leur religion sont-elles entrées à Constantinople et sont-elles devenues l’objet d'intérêt dans la littérature byzantine ? Et d'autre part, comment ce processus était-il intégré à la vie politique et sociale des Byzantins ?Je vais commencer en examinant une question encore plus basique : qui sont les Byzantins qui, à cette époque, ont eu des contacts avec les musulmans ? Je pars du principe que leurs préoccupations et intérêts dans ces rapports ont influencé la façon dont les Byzantins ont formulé leur image des Arabes et de l’islam et y ont réagi.J’ai distingué trois groupes sociaux en contact avec les musulmans à cette époque : (1) les melkites, (2) les soldats et (3) les élites de Constantinople. "Melkites" is a common label, in the medieval world of Islam, for Christians adhering to the (Chalcedonian) faith of the Byzantines. Defined by their theological profile, the Melkites also form a Church: it is from an institutional point of view that this dissertation studies their history, in Syria and Palestine, during the transition from Byzantium to Islam. While relying on a wide range of sources, the research focuses on a dossier of Church documents in Arabic issued in the late 9th century, in the course of a conflict involving David, metropolitan bishop of Damascus, and concerning the administration of its churches. Edition and French translation of this dossier are provided as an appendix. Two aspects of the history of the Melkite Church are studied: its ecclesiastical hierarchy and geography between 600 and 969, and the government of the Church through its administration. The dissertation offers a revision of the chronology of the patriarchs, an inventory of the post-Byzantine episcopal hierarchy and a discussion on the place of monasteries in the Melkite Church. The administration of worship and church property can occasionally be grasped, at the local level of the city, according to a nomenclature largely inherited from the Byzantine period, but behind which new issues such as the tax burden may be detected. The handwritten material, especially canonical documentation, provides insights into the judicial process, conflict resolution and legal practices within the Melkite Church. In a transversal way, the issue of authority in the Church and the construction of institutional memory help to think about the social significance of the ecclesial institution.

« Melkites » fait partie des appellations répandues dans le monde de l’Islam médiéval pour désigner les chrétiens adhérant à la foi (chalcédonienne) des Byzantins. Définis par leur profil théologique, les melkites forment également une Église : c’est sous l’angle institutionnel que cette thèse étudie leur histoire, dans l’espace syro-palestinien, au cours des siècles de transition de Byzance à l’Islam. Tout en s’appuyant sur un corpus de sources variées, l’enquête accorde une place centrale à un dossier de documents ecclésiastiques en arabe produits dans le dernier quart du IXe siècle, dans le cadre d’un conflit autour du métropolite David de Damas et de l’administration des églises de la ville. Ce dossier est édité et traduit en annexe. Deux volets de l’histoire de l’Église melkite sont étudiés : sa hiérarchie et sa géographie ecclésiastiques entre 600 et 969, le gouvernement de l’Église sous l’angle de son administration. La thèse propose une révision de la chronologie des patriarches, un état des lieux de la hiérarchie épiscopale post-byzantine, une réflexion sur la place des monastères dans l’Église melkite. L’administration du culte et des biens des églises se laisse appréhender ponctuellement, à l’échelle locale de la cité, selon une nomenclature largement héritée de l’époque byzantine, mais derrière laquelle des enjeux nouveaux comme le poids de l’impôt peuvent être décelés. Des pistes concernant l’exercice de la justice, la résolution des conflits et les usages juridiques au sein de l’Église melkite sont ouvertes à partir de la documentation manuscrite, notamment canonique. De manière transversale, le problème de l’autorité dans l’Église et la construction de la mémoire des institutions permettent de penser la portée sociale de l’institution ecclésiale.
