Mexican cinema today has a growing number of films every year, but the situation faced by young filmmakers in distributing what they produce remains problematic. Fiscal stimulus to invest in new productions, and the visibility that many filmmakers gain in film festivals, have been of little use. Without a legal framework protecting the philosophical creation of unequal competition with US superproductions that flood the market, the labour of performers is almost always left to drift. Unable to keep their films in posters for a time necessary for a minimal financial recovery, creators are forced to resort to spent entertainment formulas and an inventive narrative. When, on the other hand, they risk diversifying their financing and distribution strategies through co-productions, using a more economical digital format and novel distribution networks, the results are often very rewarding in addition to originals. This is the case for a handful of young filmmakers who, turning the back of the commercial cinema routines, now accept the challenge of cultural resistance in the cinema they produce.

Ces temps-ci, le cinéma mexicain voit augmenter sa production de films d’année en année. Pourtant les jeunes cinéastes affrontent de grandes difficultés pour distribuer leurs œuvres. Les mesures fiscales favorisant l’investissement dans des productions nouvelles, pas plus que la visibilité acquise par bien des cinéastes dans les festivals, n’ont pu y remédier. Tant qu’aucun cadre légal ne protègera les créations filmiques de la concurrence écrasante des super-productions étasuniennes qui inondent le marché, le travail des cinéastes ne pourra que vivoter. Ne pouvant voir leurs films à l’affiche assez longtemps pour espérer s’y retrouver financièrement, les créateurs sont contraints de recourir à des formules éculées de divertissement ou à des narrations convenues. S’ils se risquent au contraire à diversifier leurs stratégies de financement et de distribution, à travers des co-productions, en recourant au format numérique, bien meilleur marché, et à des réseaux innovants de distribution, ils obtiennent des résultats qui, en plus d’être originaux, sont bien plus gratifiants. C’est le cas d’une poignée de jeunes cinéastes qui tournent le dos au cinéma commercial et acceptent le défi actuel de la résistance culturelle dans le cinéma qu’ils produisent.

El cine mexicano cuenta hoy con un número creciente de películas cada año, y sin embargo la situación que enfrentan los cineastas jóvenes para distribuir lo que producen sigue siendo problemática. De poco han servido los estímulos fiscales para invertir en producciones nuevas, y la visibilidad que muchos cineastas conquistan en los festivales de cine. Sin un marco legal que proteja la creación fílmica de la competencia desigual con las superproducciones estadounidenses que inundan el mercado, el trabajo de los realizadores queda casi siempre a la deriva. Incapaces de mantener sus películas en cartelera por un tiempo necesario para una mínima recuperación financiera, los creadores se ven obligados a recurrir a fórmulas gastadas de entretenimiento y a una narración sin inventiva. Cuando por el contrario corren el riesgo de diversificar sus estrategias de financiamiento y distribución, a través de coproducciones, con el recurso a un formato digital más económico y con redes novedosas de distribución, los resultados suelen ser, además de originales, muy gratificadores. Tal es el caso de un puñado de cineastas jóvenes que, dando la espalda a las rutinas del cine comercial, aceptan hoy el desafío de la resistencia cultural en el cine que producen.

As long as there is no legal framework to protect the film creations from the overwhelming competition from super-productions in the US that inundate the market, the work of film-makers will only be able to vote. Not being able to see their films in the poster long enough to expect to find themselves financially, creators are forced to resort to scattered entertainment or agreed narratives. If, on the contrary, they risk diversifying their funding and distribution strategies, through co-productions, using the much cheaper digital format and innovative distribution networks, they achieve results which, in addition to being original, are much more rewarding. This is the case for a handful of young filmmakers who turn their backs to commercial cinema and accept the current challenge of cultural resistance in the cinema they produce.
