In reaction to the indigenous femicide in Canada, and to the inaction of the canadian government, the victim’s relatives and grassroots indigenous women groups created various memorials. The author focuses on the commemorative art installation Walking With Our Sisters, project of the Métis artist Christi Belcourt. Thus, the author led a field survey, to better understand if it was an empowering experience for the women participants. She will also question the definition of western feminism, in contrast with indigenous feminism.

En réaction au féminicide autochtone au Canada et à l’inertie du gouvernement canadien, des groupes militants, des associations de familles et de proches des disparues ainsi que des groupes de femmes autochtones lancent régulièrement des actions commémoratives diverses. L’auteure a mené une enquête ethnographique lors de l’installation artistique commémorative Walking With Our Sisters présentée à Ottawa en 2015, projet réalisé par l’artiste métisse Christi Belcourt. Ainsi, l’auteure s’est interrogée sur la valorisation des femmes autochtones et leur prise de pouvoir au travers de ce processus. Elle remet en question la définition du féminisme occidental en prenant en considération les critiques formulées par les féministes autochtones.

En respuesta al feminicidio autóctono en Canadá y a la inercia del gobierno canadiense, se inician diversas actividades conmemorativas por los familiares de mujeres desaparecidas y los grupos autóctonos. Hemos aprovechado la instalación artística conmemorativa Walking With Our Sisters en Ottawa, cuyo proyecto fue iniciado por la artista métis Christi Belcourt, para hacer una encuesta etnográfica. Así, nos hemos interesado en la valoración de la mujer y su toma del poder a través de este proceso. Vamos a cuestionar nuestra definición del feminismo frente a las críticas feministas autóctonas.

Walking With Our Sisters : An Artistic Commemoration for Indigenous Feminicide, towards Decolonization

Indigenous artistic creation is inextricably linked to political struggles. In a colonial context, the ways to be, act and think Autochtones are deeply affected. Art is a powerful weapon in this fight for decolonisation. This study will look at the transformative and decolonisation potential of indigenous artistic creation through the artistic practice of the artist Algonquine Nadia Myre. Several of his works address the mixed identity and colonial violence suffered by Autochtones. Indian Act (Fig.1) denounces, with traditional and participatory pervasive rewriting, a colonial bill that has led to deep epistemic injustice. To address these issues, we will dwell on a particular subject, wampum. In this research we will see it as a vehicle for deep resurgence and decolonisation. The ancient and contemporary social and political position of the Wampum makes it a special educational support for resurgence. By using the Wampum pattern in Nadia Myre’s artistic practice, we will be able to navigate through these struggles and understand how the artists Autochtones engage them. Wampum will be presented as a discursive, tangible and intangible rhetoric, a hypertext, a hyperlink (Haas 2007) between tradition and modernity, orality and writing, which will be supported by the theory of intermediacy. Jacques Derrida and the Deconstruction will also be invited to review Myre’s rewriting work in Indian Act. It will also be necessary to understand how Nadia Myre’s participatory proposal could allow for an allochtone commitment to decolonial epistemic justice.

Indian Act (fig.1) denounces, through a traditional and participatory beaded rewriting, a colonial law that has led to a profound epistemic injustice. To address these issues, we will focus on a specific object, the wampum. In this research, we will consider it as a vector of deep resurgence and decolonization. The essential ancient and contemporary socio-political position of wampum makes it a privileged didactic support of resurgence. Through the use of the wampum motif in Nadia Myre's artistic practice, we will be able to walk through these struggles and understand how Aboriginal artists engage them. Wampum will be presented as a discursive rhetoric, material and immaterial, a hypertext, a hyperlink (Haas 2007) between tradition and modernity, orality and writing, which will be supported by the theory of intermediality. Jacques Derrida and the Deconstruction will also be convened to examine the rewriting work done by Myre in Indian Act. It will also be a question of understanding how Nadia Myre's participatory proposal could enable an allochtonous engagement towards decolonial epistemic justice.

La création artistique autochtone est indissociable des luttes politiques. Dans un contexte colonial, les modes d’être, d’agir et de penser Autochtones sont profondément affectés. L’art est une arme puissante dans cette lutte pour la décolonisation. Cette étude s’intéressera ainsi au potentiel de transformation et de décolonisation de la création artistique autochtone, à travers la pratique artistique de l’artiste Algonquine Nadia Myre. Plusieurs de ses œuvres adressent la mixité identitaire et la violence coloniale subie par les Autochtones. Indian Act (fig.1) dénonce, à l’aide d’une réécriture perlée traditionnelle et participative, un texte de loi colonial qui a conduit à une injustice épistémique profonde. Pour adresser ces problématiques, nous nous ancrerons sur un objet particulier, le wampum. Dans cette recherche, nous le considérerons comme un vecteur de résurgence et de décolonisation profondes. La position socio-politique ancienne et contemporaine essentielle du wampum en fait un support didactique privilégié de résurgence. Grâce à l’utilisation du motif du wampum dans la pratique artistique de Nadia Myre, nous pourrons cheminer à travers ces luttes et comprendre comment les artistes Autochtones les engagent. Le wampum sera présenté comme une rhétorique discursive, matérielle et immatérielle, un hypertexte, un hyperlien (Haas 2007) entre tradition et modernité, oralité et écriture, qui sera supportée par la théorie de l’intermédialité. Jacques Derrida et la Déconstruction seront également convoqués pour examiner le travail de réécriture effectué par Myre dans Indian Act. Il s’agira également de comprendre comment la proposition participative de Nadia Myre pourrait permettre un engagement allochtone vers une justice épistémique décoloniale.
