Is the ecology of behaviour relevant to understanding and predicting population dynamics?
the ecology of populations looks at how the number and composition (age, sex) of individuals in a population change. Many of the mechanisms that bring about these changes are associated with behaviour, for example by the way individuals defend their territories, seek partners, or disperse. It is the...

Factors determining the production of calves in the cattle farming system of the State of Tabasco, Mexicohttp://b2d21575-7ad8-4a30ba-80aa126122fd Introduction: The cattle farming system consists of the production of calves at weaning for subsequent sale and fattening. In the State of Tabasco, a high percentage of producers are engaged in this activity. However, there is little information on this production system. The aim of this study was to characterise the system of beef and veal production and to identify the factors affecting the production of calves in the State of Tabasco. Method: To this end, 342 producers were interviewed, based on a structured survey; it obtained information on the producer’s data, social characteristics, infrastructure, hato structures, and production and handling practices. In order to identify the types of producers, a conglomerate analysis was carried out using the Ward method and euclidiana to square distance; in order to identify the variables that explain the production of calves, a linear regression analysis was carried out. Results: The conglomerate analysis identified three types of producers: (1) small; (2) medium; and (3) large. 63.4 % of producers were classified as small (< 14 cows in production); 29 % as medium (between 15 and 34 cows in production); and 7.6 % as large producers (between 35 and 80 cows in production). In all three types of producers, the number of cows in production, the rate of technology adoption and the amount of concentrated feed explain the production of grapefruit. Discussion or Conclusion: The characterisation of the cattle farming system in tropical regions is important, given that more than half of the livestock in these regions uses this production system. In addition, knowing the factors that determine the production of nursery trees can help to generate strategies to support this type of producer and improve the system’s production variables.

Educational needs on pesticide risk in the socio-environmental context of Sonorahttp farming communities://21563d43-970a-4971-95b4-fb8a7eb7c2ae Introduction. In order to propose strategies for education and communication on pesticides in the agricultural communities of Sonora, it is necessary to place the issue of pesticide exposure in the socio-cultural and environmental context of the communities concerned, taking into account the factors contributing to the increased risk of exposure of agricultural workers and their families. This study examines the population, educational, cultural and working factors of inhabitants and agricultural workers in these communities, as well as the limitations of community infrastructure and housing conditions in relation to the risk of pesticide contamination. On the basis of this analysis, possible educational alternatives aimed at mitigating such risk in the socio-cultural context of these communities are proposed. Method. From the studies reported on the presence of pesticide residues in agricultural and aquaculture products, soil, water, the environment and body fluids of children and adults in Sonora, it can be concluded that both agricultural workers and the population living near agricultural areas are at higher risk of pesticide contamination. Five communities located in the most productive agricultural valleys of Sonora were selected to carry out this study, in which pesticide related research has been carried out. Basically, the information obtained from surveys applied to residents and farm workers in these communities was analysed to explore their knowledge of the use and management of pesticides, the perception of the risk posed by these substances and the personal protection practices they carry out for the prevention of such risks (at home and at work). It also describes the infrastructure of the inhabitants and the dwellings of their inhabitants in relation to the potential risk of pollution. Results. Surveys revealed that the populations studied have very low knowledge of the action and health risks caused by exposure to pesticides, a situation that is common in their daily lives. 70 % of respondents are not adequately protected when applying pesticides, or when performing agricultural work. According to the causes of symptoms or malestars reported by respondents, very few perceive or associate pesticides as a health risk. On the other hand, the limited infrastructure available to most inhabitants and poor housing conditions increases the risk of exposure. Conclusions. The educational, communication and capacity-building programmes on pesticides implemented in those communities should place emphasis on their respective social, cultural, ethnic and environmental context, in such a way as to lead to lasting behavioural and concise changes that substantially reduce the risk situation they present. In the general area of infrastructure, urgent programmes are needed to encourage the improvement of drinking water resources, the construction and health of dwellings, as well as the provision of environmental protection around the villages.
