However, the last chapter, which recounts the sea journey back to France, is less well known, but crucial for understanding the author's conflicting feelings: a constant back and forth between adventure and routine. The Mediterranean Sea becomes a means to an end, as hostile as it is sublime, which influences the writer's’ state of mind and helps him to experience a more reflective and progressive return, after six months of total disconnection. ; Le Voyage en Espagne est un des récits de voyage du XIXe siècle le plus renommé et étudié. Néanmoins, le dernier chapitre, qui décrit le retour maritime vers la France, tout en étant moins connu, nous semble cependant fondamental pour comprendre les sentiments contradictoires de l’auteur : un constant va et vient entre aventure et routine. La mer Méditerranée devient un moyen, aussi hostile que sublime, pour atteindre son dessein qui conditionne son état d'esprit changeant et l’aide à vivre un retour plus réfléchi et progressif, après six mois de dépaysement total.
